A few years ago, my grandparents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.  Through those fifty years, they had celebrated the births of four children, eight grandchildren, new jobs and also mourned the loss of family members and friends and comforted each other through illnesses.  They had been through so much together that finding a 50th anniversary gift seemed arbitrary and as though nothing we could purchase could signify those fifty years that they had spent together.

In order to replace the piano that is used to during worship services, the church we belong to, has been raising money for quite a while. So, after several fund raisers and private donations, we had collected enough money to buy a baby grand piano. To pick out the baby grand piano, several of the church members were selected. Because I am on the finance committee, I was one of the people that were to be involved in the shopping trip.

I had very limited knowledge of the baby grand piano. All I really knew was that the baby grand piano is smaller than a grand piano. I also knew that we did not have the money or space for the larger model. I made arrangements to meet my fellow parishioners to go on our shopping trip. I felt that the full time pianist should make the overall decision on which baby grand piano that we would purchase being she would be the one playing the instrument the majority of the time. However I also did not know that there would be so many models to choose from. When prices were looked into to begin the fund raising a mid range price was chosen. When we arrived at the piano showroom I was surprised to see that there was a baby grand piano that was half the price of the amount we had raised. We were told that this piano was used, but it had been completely reconditioned. It was actually a better brand and of higher quality than the newer model in our price range. I thought it made sense to purchase the used baby grand piano and use the remaining money to buy other things for our church. The minister’s wife agreed with me; however the pianist felt that people had donated towards a new piano and we should not buy a used one. I did not see why this would make a difference; the money that was raised was going towards the stated use. The choir director tried to remain neutral on the topic, which upset the pianist even more because the two of them are close friends.

The sales person that was trying to help us with our selection sat down to play the pianos so that we could hear the quality of tones.  I do not have a background in music, but the quality of the used piano did sound better to me than the new model. The music director agreed and so did the minister’s wife so we purchased the used piano and made arrangements to have it delivered. The other members of the finance committee were very pleased that we had the additional money that we could use for the church.  The only person not happy was the pianist. She refused to play the baby grand piano the first Sunday that it was used for our worship service. The minister is trying to help her deal with her feelings, but at this time she is still not talking to the music director.

Just about every family has a real nut as a member. Why not make a special nut gift basket for this character? I still had a few more nuts to collect as well and I was starting to get a little nervous about the undertaking.

Dad must have expensive tastes because the next snack on the list was macadamias. He loves to eat these plain but he really loves them when they are dipped in chocolate. Just one package of the natural variety and one package of the chocolate covered variety cleared out my budget for the whole nut gift basket.

I had to choose a smaller container than I originally selected and I was really aggravated when I saw a complete nut gift basket for less than what I spent on the few items I bought. Dad did love his present and the card that said, “You drive us nuts” but I really think that the professionally made nut gift basket would have been better. There’s always next year.

So its almost February already, and you know what that means.  That girl or guy you met on New Years has made the preceding month or so exciting and adventurous, but now things are settling down and its time to pay up or hit the road.  Yes, that’s right, it’s almost Valentines Day once again and that means more gifts!  And you thought you’d have a break now that the holidays are over.

The good news is, gifts for Valentine’s Day are usually less crucial as the holidays, or birthdays.  Let me emphasize the ‘usually’ in that last sentence.  Hopefully you’ve gotten a feel for the person you’re dating, and you can tell if they like to make a big deal out of Valentines Day or not.  Even if they don’t, if you’re with someone you really care about you may want to seize the opportunity to make a big showing of it.  The right gifts for Valentine’s, and a well thought out plan can really knock your date’s socks off.

I think this last point is especially important, and especially for men.  Good gifts for Valentine’s Day are one thing, but good gifts combined with a fun and/or romantic evening you’ve been planning for weeks is a lot better.

Personally, I’ve found that a ‘shotgun’ approach works best with gifts for Valentine’s Day.  I take the opportunity to get a handful of smaller gifts, and try to weave them in with a night out on the town, or romantic candle lit dinner cooked, served, and cleaned by yours truly.  Flowers, candies, and jewelry combined together make some great gifts for Valentine’s Day.

Now that all sounds like a lot of money, and it certainly can be, but you don’t have to take out loans to get some decent gifts for Valentine’s Day.  If you’re on a tight budget, opt for the romantic candle lit dinner you cook yourself idea.  Can’t cook?  Even better!  Learning how to make a decent meal, or at least trying to, will show her your willing to make some effort for her.  Also, you can say a lot with a well-written card, which won’t cost you much at all.

All gifts convey a message, and gifts for Valentine’s Day are no different.  Choose your message carefully before diving in and buying things.  What stage are you in your relationship, and what stage would you like to be in?
